The game of soccer has taken over this village very recently. Not owing of a large multi-nation tournament, but because of one school girl. 15 year old Jennifer Douglas Abubabkar Sangweni loves playing soccer and she caught the bug after seeing a major tournament on television a few years back. Regrettably, other than being able to kick a ball around with her friends, there was no other way to play the game. Jennifer’s school had no funds for physical games and no money to set anything up. So, Jennifer took the matter into her own hands and approached her teacher.
Luckily for Jennifer, her teacher liked the idea—a self-funded soccer team representing the school, but not utilizing school money. The teacher, Miss Uramundi, spoke to the head master of the school, who was very impressed with the plan. He suggested to Jennifer that if she could gather enough volunteers, the school would use its own money to mark a proper pitch on the field that they could use for practice.
We spoke to Jennifer to get her opinion of the plan. “I was really excited that my head teacher agreed. He even said he would paint a pitch for us and give us goals to use.”
Her mother said, “We have been so proud because she is only 15 and she has come up with this idea to bring the children of the community together. This soccer team means that we can play other schools in the district and have our own little soccer league. It helps all the children to get to know each other and we are very happy that she came up with such a good idea.”
Her father added “I have two daughters and I am pleased that one of them likes soccer. I watched the games on TV and it is great to see that the children in the village like to play soccer in a more controlled environment instead of just knocking the ball about. She has shown that she has strong qualities and we are very proud.”
